What is a GPS Tracking System

It is a system that enables us to track or monitor assets such as cars, tracks, motor cycle, etc. and people using a mobile network system and/or the internet.

The GPS tracking system consists of a GPS tracking device, a mobile phone or a computer with internet connection and a software that is installed in the internet.

A GPS tracking unit known as, GPS tracker, is a device that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the precise location of a vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached and to record the position of the asset at regular intervals. The GPS tracker has SIM that will enable it to communicate with the owner of the asset (car, track, machinery, people, etc.) to be tracked using the mobile network in the country of operation.

The tracking system is installed on the vehicle (car, bus, truck). The device is controlled by mobile phone that makes it possible for the user to communicate with the system wirelessly. The vehicle tracking system has a SIM slot that uses a mobile phone SIM to receive and transmit SMS text message like we do in normal mobile phone. The user can send a SMS from a mobile phone and locate the vehicle that is to be tracked.  Since the message that comes from the GPS tracker is a text, we will need an internet connection to see the location in the form of a map using software such as Google map.

The simplest configuration to use a working GPS tracking system is:

  • a GPS tracking device
  • a SIM card to be used with the tracker
  • a Mobile phone

Then the following operations can be done as a test to the system

  1. The SIM card will be inserted to the GPS tracker.
  2. The GPS tracker will be installed to say a car we want to rack.
  3. The car then will be driven to some where.
  4. To know where the car is the owner of the car will send a text message to the SIM number of the tracker.
  5. The tracker will send back the location of the car.
  6. The owner will use the mobile phone’s internet software to use Google map to see the actual location of the car.

For more function we need a special software that helps us see many reports..

In order to monitor more aspects of the vehicle to be tracked we need additional  accessories such as microphone, camera, alcohol sensor, fuel level sensor, temperature sensor, alarm button, driver ıdentification sensor, truck body door sensor, etc.

There are various types of GPS tracking systems the most common are: vehicle tracking systems, personal tracking systems and asset tracking systems.

What is GPS?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that provides reliable location and time information in all weather and at all times and anywhere on or near the Earth when and where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.

What is a GSM?

Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM (originally from Groupe Special Mobile), is the world’s most popular standard for mobile telephone systems. This GSM device consists of SIM card slot in which a SIM can be inserted which has a unique number, this unique number is used for contacting it as we do in a mobile phone.
